LAN cable is the strongest speaker cable
This time about speaker cable.
[LAN speaker cable]
When we are investigating speaker cables on the net, we hear something dubious about LAN cables having good sound.
I tried it immediately.
Certainly, the sound is improved compared to all speaker cables including Belden 8470 used so far.
When I looked there, there was a wonderful collection of materials.
[Effect of LAN cable on sound quality]
Based on these contents, the following merits can be understood by organizing the LAN cable.
(XNUMX) The insulator is ideal polyethylene, and the capacitance is constant even in the low frequency range, and there is little loss in the low frequency range.
②Two twisted pairs are four sets, a total of eight are insulated. The effect of the skin effect that makes high-frequency sounds thinner is calculated at 2 Hz and the wire diameter is 4 mm, and the single-wire specification for LAN is 8 AWG and the wire diameter is 20,000 mm, so it is not necessary to consider the effect of the skin effect.
(6) Due to the finely twisted twisted pair structure, a sufficient shielding effect can be expected without a metal shield. In addition, a single-wire category 4 cable has a cross-shaped separator installed in the center and prevents four pairs of interference, giving consideration to high-quality audio cables.
④Easily enjoy the benefits of parallel wiring. (See below)
It is easy to distinguish between PE and PVC, which are insulating materials. All three speaker cables at hand were submerged. In other words, you can see that the LAN cable has better sound quality than the average speaker cable coating.
また"On UL standard wires and cables"You can also see that LAN cable polyethylene has better sound quality than flame-retardant polyethylene used in audio cables. The quote from the cable expert mentioned above is probably the first mention of using LAN cables as audio cables.
[4 or 1 pair]
I think that parallel wiring is a great advantage of using LAN cables as speaker cables.
When citing from the above site the reason why using all four pairs in parallel is more advantageous than using one pair separately
(XNUMX) Conductor resistance (R) is reduced to XNUMX/XNUMX. ⇒Improves sound output to the lower range.
②Inductance (L) is also reduced to XNUMX/XNUMX.
③ Capacitance (C) is quadrupled
④The characteristic impedance (Zo) is reduced to XNUMX/XNUMX. ⇒It approaches the impedance of the speaker system, improves transmission characteristics in the high frequency range, and can be expected to improve resolution.
The effect is also obvious on the auditory side, and if it is a pair, the sound will be thin.
[Single wire or stranded wire]
The conductor resistance is lower on a single wire and the conductor surface is smoother, so no matter what you think, a single wire should sound better.
However, when comparing the two with a length of about 2m, there was almost no difference. In general, a single-wire LAN cable is used when the cable length is 10 m or more, but if it is used as an audio cable, the difference between a single-wire cable and a stranded cable will be so small that it is difficult to perceive it if it is short.
It is meaningful that seven strands are twisted. Six shapes are ideally arranged in a neat circle around the center one, which contributes to excellent performance. The LAN cable is well made to really fine details.
In my personal opinion, the effect of conductor resistance is dominant, and I think there are few other effects. That's why thick and short ones are generally considered good, but thicker ones have a greater effect of the skin effect. Therefore, I think it is an ideal idea to reduce the resistance by using a parallel circuit with a wire diameter that is not affected by the skin effect.
There are super-high-quality audio cables that are particular about the material, but there is almost no difference in physical properties due to the image only, and I don't think there is any meaning in the length of the speaker cable.
Ideally, a Category 6 single-wire LAN would be best, but the cables are thicker and stiffer, which makes handling more cumbersome.
If the length is less than 10m, stranded LAN cable is enough.
And Category 7 cables are shielded, but if you can't ground them, it's counterproductive. Please do not use it as a speaker cable.
Also, each twisted pair should be + and-respectively.
If the LAN cable is too thin as shown in the picture, the conductor resistance will be too large or the sound will be thin. Since the conductors are also very thin, it becomes difficult to cut them quickly. I think it is better to have a wire diameter of about AWG28 even for stranded wires.
From the selection of the insulating material to the number of twisted wires, twist pitch, etc., it is not easy to find an audio cable that is so detailed that noise prevention, wideband, and high-resolution characteristics are taken into account.
Perfect for carpet speakers that pursue the fidelity of the original sound. That's around 1 yen per meter.
The LAN cable can be declared the strongest speaker cable of COSPA.
